Choosing the ring that you want to give someone when you propose can be very difficult. For some families, a ring is passed down from generation to generation, but sometimes the style of the ring is not right for the person who will be receiving it.

If you have a ring that has been passed down within your family and you do not feel it is right for your future fiancé, you still have options. You don’t have to feel guilty for not using the ring if you use it to create a new customized ring for your love. Follow these steps to create a new custom ring.

Determine the Size of Your Loved One's Ring Finger

The first thing you need to do is to find out what size ring your love wears. If you do not know off hand and do not want to ask them because you would risk spoiling the surprise, grab a ring that they already own. A jeweler can use the ring to determine approximately what ring size the person wears.

Meet with the Jeweler

Once you know the correct ring size, make an appointment with a jeweler. Provide them with the ring that you want to use to create a new ring and let them know what types of designs you are considering.

The jeweler will look over the ring and be able to tell you if all of it is usable or if only portions can be used to make a new ring. Most precious metals can be melted down and poured into a mold to create new pieces.

Create a Design for the Ring

The jeweler will then be able to work with you to create the perfect ring for your love. You may start with a few sketches with paper and pencil, but the jeweler will eventually have the design created in a computer system. The system will account for every detail of the design of the ring.

Have a Mold Created

Once you have chosen the perfect design for the ring, the computer system will create a custom mold for your ring. The mold will be created with lasers to ensure the ring is exactly as you have designed it. Once the mold is created, the jeweler will inspect the mold to make sure everything is perfect.

Create the New Ring

Once the mold has been created, the jeweler will melt down the ring that you provided to them (if the metal is salvageable) and pour it into the new mold. The metal will take a short time to cool and harden.

Once the metal hardens, the jeweler will put any stones into place. You can choose to use the stones from the ring that has been inherited in your family or upgrade to larger stones to create a more dramatic look.

Inspect the Ring

Once the ring has been made, you will need to go to the jewelry store to look at the ring and make sure that it is perfect. If you notice any issues, let the jeweler know right away. They can fix any issues on the spot to ensure you can give the person you love the perfect ring. If the ring doesn't fit your loved one, it can be resized to the exact size needed after you give it to them.
